I enjoy more gore-related horror over psychological horror so this story seemed more appealing to me. I enjoyed the creepy aspect of the idea of the story. The story continues on with more and more people being found dead and sewn together. He agrees to meet up with some of his former classmates to plan the ceremony all while these sewing attacks continue to appear. Michio receives an unexpected visitor, his former classmate who tries to convince him to attend the class reunion being held soon. The main character, Michio, is a shut-in who hasn’t left his house in seven years. “Billions Alone” starts with a news channel talking about a missing couple being found dead and sewn together. Because of that, I preferred some of the short stories over others, my two favorites being “The Licking Woman” and “Billions Alone.” The book has different types of horror, allowing it to have something for every horror lover. This book is filled to the brim with frightening images, thrilling plots, and shocking twists. Venus in the Blind Spot is a collection of ten short, scary stories by Junji Ito, a very well-known manga artist. Are you a fan of horror? Do you like graphic novels? How about a collection of horror stories written by one of the most famous horror manga artists?

Half Bad is the first book I have read that contains magic-which is something I’ve always avoided as I simply don’t find it appealing-but this story isn’t your average magical tale. He wasn’t accepted by anyone in the white witch community except for members of his immediate family, and suffered strong discrimination and bullying. Split between two types of witches that actively hunt and kill each other, Nathan’s had an extremely tough upbringing. Half Bad is set in modern day, where witches blend in, have jobs and attend school, and ‘fains’ (non-witches) are completely unaware of their existence. Nathan gives us in-depth glimpses into his past, where we discover he grew up a Half Code in a white witch society-his white witch mother died soon after his birth, and his father, who Nathan has never met, is the most feared and notorious living black witch. Meat, veg, more meat, more veg, and don’t forget plenty of fresh air. You have to give her some credit, cos you are super healthy, super fit. The second is his relentless good sense of humour. The first his mantra-“the trick is not to mind”-not to mind the pain or the captivity or anything. At first we’ve no idea how long he’s been trapped there, or why, but learn of his two coping strategies. Half Bad begins with teenage protagonist Nathan in a cage, imprisoned by a punishing and severe white witch. Benedict, metaphysics, library design, or The Thing from the Crypt, you’ll love it. I think the best way I can describe the book is to quote directly from the back cover of my old Picador edition: “Whether you’re into Sherlock Holmes, Montaillou, Borges, the nouvelle critique, the Rule of St. The Name of the Rose is set in 1327 and is narrated by Adso of Melk, a Benedictine novice from Austria. Unfortunately, it was a busier month than I expected and I fell too far behind to be able to participate in the readalong, but I have been re-reading the book anyway and finished a few days ago. I knew I hadn’t understood everything the first time, so when I saw that Annabel of Annabookbel was hosting a readalong in January I thought it would be interesting to read it again. I can’t remember when I first read Umberto Eco’s The Name of the Rose it was possibly in the early 2000s – long enough ago to have forgotten most of the story, but recently enough that certain scenes have stayed quite clearly in my mind. The stories of the heroes are probably not as glorious as you expect them to be. Thank you Stephen fry for sharing her story!Įventhough they are known as heroes most of the stories end tragically or have gruesome details. But is probably the greatest warrior or at least hunter that deserves to be more well known. My favourite story in this book is probably that of Atalanta! A Heroin that I hadn’t heard of before. Most of the stories you have probably heard or read about before. The book includes the stories of Perseus, Heracles (you might now him as Hercules), Bellerophon, Orpheus, Jason, Atalanta, Oedipus and Theseus. The children of the gods that have experienced many adventures. You may have already guessed it but in Heroes, Stephen Fry retells the stories about the Heroes. In which he tells about the Greek myths, specifically about the gods.Īnd I have finally read the second book (currently already a trilogy), and again I wanted to give you a review. In 2019 I read and wrote a review on the book Mythos by Stephen Fry. To Catch an Heiress is the only one of my books that was conceived out of an opening line.Three cheers for Oxford University Press, who graciously waived their permission fees, obviously deciding that romance novels = excellent public relations! So I ended up hunched over the Oxford English Dictionary (the kind you need a magnifying glass to read) for hours, looking up new definitions. The problem was, we discovered this after I’d written the book. This meant that all the definitions would have to come from the same dictionary, so that I could make only one application for permission. It turns out that dictionary definitions are not public domain, which meant I would have to apply for permission to use them in my book. I had a lot of fun with the “definitions” that appear at the beginning of each chapter, but they turned out to be a LOT of work. If you read carefully, you will find a theme throughout the book about stars and starry nights. The working title of this book was Starry Night. Sixteen years earlier, that very dress was measured and sewn for a different wearer: Melody's mother, for her own ceremony- a celebration that ultimately never took place. Watched lovingly by her relatives and friends, making her entrance to the music of Prince, she wears a special custom-made dress. Moving forward and backward in time, Jacqueline Woodson's taut and powerful new novel uncovers the role that history and community have played in the experiences, decisions, and relationships of these families, and in the life of the new child.Īs the book opens in 2001, it is the evening of sixteen-year-old Melody's coming of age ceremony in her grandparents' Brooklyn brownstone. Obviously it was amazing because otherwise I wouldn’t have rated it with five stars. I don’t know if I’m going to be able to find the right words to express my love for Furyborn. To find her, Eliana joins a rebel captain on a dangerous mission and discovers that the evil at the heart of the empire is more terrible than she ever imagined.Īs Rielle and Eliana fight in a cosmic war that spans millennia, their stories intersect, and the shocking connections between them ultimately determine the fate of their world–and of each other. Now, she believes herself untouchable–until her mother vanishes without a trace, along with countless other women in their city. When the Undying Empire conquered her kingdom, she embraced violence to keep her family alive. If she fails, she will be executed…unless the trials kill her first.Ī thousand years later, the legend of Queen Rielle is a mere fairy tale to bounty hunter Eliana Ferracora. To prove she is the Sun Queen, Rielle must endure seven trials to test her magic. The only people who should possess this extraordinary power are a pair of prophesied queens: a queen of light and salvation and a queen of blood and destruction. When assassins ambush her best friend, the crown prince, Rielle Dardenne risks everything to save him, exposing her ability to perform all seven kinds of elemental magic. Follows two fiercely independent young women, centuries apart, who hold the power to save their world…or doom it. In the meantime he fathers two sons, Tony Curtis and Perry Lopez, who both inherit their father's geopolitical views. He goes back to the steppes of the Ukraine and awaits a time for some real payback. Yul Brynner as one of the Cossack brigade commanders lops off the right hand of Guy Rolfe, the Polish prince in retribution, but that hardly satisfies. As rulers the Poles hire out the Cossack Ukranians who in today's terminology might be considered a paramilitary outfit to fight off the Ottoman Turks and then turn on them. Not sure why the script didn't include it. The Poles are Roman Catholic and the Ukranians are Russian Orthodox, it's a very big part of the reason for the resentments shown here yet we never see the religious beliefs portrayed for either group. What's strangely muted in this version though is the religious angle. It's an exciting portrait of 16th century Ukraine under the then powerful kingdom of Poland. Although the famous Nikolai Gogol novel, Taras Bulba, was filmed many times, this version starring Tony Curtis and Yul Brynner is the best known at least in the USA. My previous novel, THE BLINDS, is a thriller about a remote, secretive town in West Texas, and it's been described by Dennis Lehane as "part thriller, part Western, part pulpy whodunit. a propulsive and meaningful meditation on redemption and loss." Spoiler: Things go wrong, nothing is what it seems, and soon they’ll find out what exactly they’re capable of and what they’re willing to do, to save their marriage and to save themselves. Daisy and Craig retreat to the woods to try and save their troubled relationship by signing on to The Eden Test, a secretive program with a simple promise: Seven days.
